Busy Is Not the Same as Healthy: Why Medical Practices Should Never Stop Marketing

One of the most common reasons a successful medical practice does not invest in marketing is also one of the reasons it eventually may wish it had.

The practice is already busy.

The physicians have full schedules. New patients may wait weeks or months for appointments. Referral sources continue sending patients. Staff members are struggling to keep up with the volume they already have. From inside the practice, spending money to attract additional patients can seem unnecessary or even counterproductive.

Why market when there are already more patients than providers have time to see?

That question makes sense if marketing is viewed only as a way to generate leads and fill empty appointment slots. But that is a very narrow definition of what marketing should accomplish for a healthcare organization.

A healthy healthcare marketing strategy also builds reputation, strengthens the practice brand, develops preference for individual providers, supports patient retention, protects referral relationships, helps shape the patient and service mix, and prepares the organization for changes that have not happened yet.
