The Future of Search in an AI-Driven World

For most of the modern internet era, “search” meant something fairly specific. A person opened Google or another search engine, typed a few words into a box, reviewed a page of results and clicked a link.

That model is not disappearing, but it is no longer the whole story.

Today, someone researching a business might start with Google, ask ChatGPT a detailed question, compare companies in Google Maps, watch a YouTube video, read Reddit discussions, scan reviews and eventually return to Google to search for a specific company by name. Google itself is also incorporating generative AI directly into the search experience through AI Overviews and AI Mode.

That creates plenty of opportunities for dramatic predictions: SEO is dead. Websites will become irrelevant. Nobody will use Google anymore. AI will replace search.

Those claims make good headlines, but they are not particularly useful for a business owner deciding where to invest marketing dollars.
